(Why eating a Toshikoshi soba?)

江戸時代から、ソバは他の麺類よりも切れやすいことから「今年一年の災厄を断ち切る」という意味で、大晦日の晩の年越し前に食べます。

Since the Edo period, buckwheat is easier to cut than other noodles, it is eaten before New Year's Eve on New Year's Eve, meaning "cut off the disaster of the year."
